Sand tray therapy is a method of psychological play therapy which is used to understand the mental health and well being of individuals by looking at how they express themselves through the manipulation of objects in small tabletop sand trays. It is often used in tandem with other forms of Jungian psychology such as dream work and art therapy. The Jungian approach to sand tray therapy is aimed at using imaginative play and/or expression for the purposes of resolution and healing. There is no concern with strict interpretation but rather the practice of “staying with the metaphor” as a way to address unconscious material. Bringing the symbolic images to conscious awareness is considered to be the healing agent.
